Intro to our Lost Empire Herbs review: Gynostemma Tea (loose leaf form). When we write our Lost Empire Herbs reviews, we try products that pique our interest. Thus was the case with their Gynostemma tea that they launched a while back. I think it was the name that caught my eye first because I had never heard of it. What on earth is Gynostemma anyway? I had to find out, and once I did, I had to buy it!

About Gynostemma aka Jiaogulan aka miracle grass

I learned that “Gynostemma” also goes by “Jiaogulan tea” or “miracle grass.” The guys at Lost Empire Herbs also mention that people sometimes call it the “Herb of Immortality.” So yeah – that caught my attention!

Also known by its scientific name Gynostemma pentaphyllum, it is a herbaceous vine native to China, Japan, Korea, and other parts of Asia. I found it fascinating that it’s considered to be in the “Cucurbitacae” family (i.e. the same family as melons and cucumbers).

Gynostemma has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for hundreds of years, and is known for its potential health benefits.

Gynostemma pentaphyllum is also commonly referred to as “Southern Ginseng” and has gained attention for its similarity to ginseng in terms of its adaptogenic effects and potential benefits, although the two plants are not closely related.

How is Gynostemma prepared?

Like with many other herbal teas, it is the leaves of the gynostemma plant that growers harvest and use. I know that they have an extract, but I’m really enjoying the tea (in loose leaf form).

Brew your gynostemma tea by steeping the leaves in hot water, similar to other herbal teas. It has a mild, ever-so-slight sweet taste. Personally, I am enjoying it a LOT – and have begun brewing it in larger quantities and refrigerating it – Very soothing and refreshing!

It’s Growing in Popularity!

While gynostemma may sound unfamiliar, it has a long history of traditional use in Asia and is becoming more popular in the Western world due to its potential health benefits, which we’ll take a look at in a moment. Having said that, we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you that individual (including you!) responses to herbal remedies can and will vary, and scientific research on gynostemma is still evolving.

Interested in trying gynostemma tea? Whether it’s gynostemma or any other herbal supplement, it’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure it aligns with your specific needs and circumstances.

How Does Lost Empire Herbs Recommend Preparing Gynostemma?

When I brewed my first cup of Gynostemma tea, I neglected to give the leaves a “quick rinse” first. This is something the company does recommend. That’s just to make sure you rinse any dust or other residue.

They recommend about a teaspoon of the loose leaf steeped in boiling water. I cover my mug while steeping. Supposedly it’s a good idea in order to keep the volatile oils in the tea, and not escaping via the steam.

I’m in the process of creating a review video myself, but for now, take a look at the official Lost Empire Herbs video titled “How to Take Gynostemma.” The article continues below the video:

Gynostemma tea has been studied for its potential effects on blood sugar levels, particularly in individuals with diabetes or impaired glucose metabolism. Here are some of the observed effects:

Blood sugar regulation: Gynostemma tea has shown promising effects in helping regulate blood sugar levels. It may help improve insulin sensitivity, enhance glucose uptake by cells, and inhibit certain enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. These actions can contribute to better blood sugar control.

Antidiabetic effects: Some studies have suggested that gynostemma tea may have antidiabetic properties. These studies show it may decrease fasting blood sugar levels and improve glucose tolerance, which is beneficial for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes.

Glycemic control: Gynostemma tea may help in maintaining stable blood sugar levels throughout the day. By preventing rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar, it may contribute to improved glycemic control and provide sustained energy levels.

Insulin secretion and production: Gynostemma tea has been found to stimulate insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and promote the production of insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels. These effects can be particularly beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

Antioxidant effects: The antioxidant properties of gynostemma tea may indirectly contribute to blood sugar regulation. By reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, it can help protect pancreatic beta cells and improve their function, thereby supporting insulin production and glucose metabolism.

Additional Notes on Gynostemma and Blood Sugar

While gynostemma tea shows promise in blood sugar regulation, we need more research to fully understand its mechanisms of action and its potential benefits for individuals with diabetes. If you have diabetes or any blood sugar-related concerns, it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider before incorporating gynostemma tea into your routine. They can provide personalized guidance and monitor your blood sugar levels appropriately.
