3D printing at home
3D printing at home
I thought 3D printers were futuristic and out of reach until I found out my son was using one for a class project in middle school. 3D printers are now, and the Robo 3D R1 +Plus offers an affordable way to bring this exciting technology into your home. Imagine “printing” necessary household items and parts instead of visiting the store. And it's great for all kinds of fun applications, too. For example:
- Robo 3D Bath Pack - includes designs for soap dish, toothbrush holder, shower head and more
- Robo 3D Garden Pack - includes designs for planter, vase, birdhouse, gardening tools, and more
- Robo 3D Kitchen Pack - includes designs for cutting board, juicer, shot glass, and more
- Robo 3D Office Pack - includes designs for USB dock, business card holder, desk organizer, and more
The Robo 3D +Plus comes with everything you need to get started, including several pre-installed 3D models of items you can build, and a spool of filament that can be used to build them. It's a plug-and-print device about as big as a sewing machine that can open up a whole new world of creativity. Optional additional filament comes in a variety of colors and a single project can feature a veritable rainbow of hues.

More details on the Robo 3D™ R1 +Plus
Product Research
Features
Overview: The Robo 3D R1 +Plus is a "plug-n-print" 3-dimensional printer with software that lets you print dozens of items. The R1 +Plus comes over 20 pre-loaded 3D-designed files for printing. All of the settings are pre-configured for optimal 3D printing. The printer works with both Windows and Mac operating systems. A small spool (300g) of blue PLA filament is included to get you started right out of the box.
Technology: The printer uses PlastiJet 3D Printing technology which consists of melting plastic-based materials onto a moving heated platform, layer-by-layer, to create a 3-dimensional object. The layers are only 100 Microns (or 0.1mm) thick. The R1 +Plus is capable of printing items up to 10" x 9" x 8" in size.
MatterControl Software: The Robo 3D R1 +Plus comes with an SDHC memory card with the MatterControl software needed for the printer to work with your computer. A copy of the software is also available on the manufacturer's website. The memory card contains a Getting Started video, as well as software for both Windows (Vista and higher) and Macintosh (OS X 10.7 or above) operating systems.
AutoDesk Fusion 360: A one-year free trial of AutoDesk Fusion 360 is provided via download, a $300 value. Fusion 360 is a cloud-based 3D CAD program that lets you design your own 3D printing projects.
STL Files: The R1 +Plus 3D printer uses STL (STereo Lithography) files to create the 3-dimensional objects. Beyond the built-in files, there are numerous third-party websites, such as Thingverse.com and GrabCAD.com with hundreds of thousands of STL files for downloading.
Automatic Leveling: The printer features an automatic, 9-point leveling system that calibrates itself before every print job. This assures you get the best quality 3D prints every time.
Hot End: The R1 +Plus comes with an all-metal Hot End (nozzle) that is heated to 210°C for PLA filament, or 240°C for ABS. The filament passes through the Hot End where it is melted and extruded onto the printing bed. The R1 +Plus also has a cooling print fan that will activate when printing PLA and other plastics that require quick cooling between layers so that it solidifies before the next pass.
Printing Materials: The R1 +Plus uses two types of filaments for 3D printing: PLA and ABS. PLA, or Polylactic Acid, is a biodegradable plastic, made from raw materials, such as cornstarch or sugar cane. ABS, of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene Styrene, is an oil-based plastic, capable of creating sturdy plastic objects for everyday use. The filaments used by the printer are 1.75mm thick. PLA and ABS filaments come in a wide variety of colors to give you more options.
File Packs and DIY Kits: Four file packs of "ready-to-print" projects and two DIY Kits are available (sold separately). These 2 GB USB drives contain twenty 3D printer projects each. Just drag and drop the files into your Robo 3D software, and start printing. In addition, two DIY kits are available with the parts and 3D print files to build your own desk clock or drone. The following file packs are available:
- Bath Pack: The bath pack contains files for a soap dish, back scratcher, shower head, toothbrush holder, etc.
- Garden Pack: The garden pack contains files to print a vase, birdhouse, planting pot, garden signs, or a garden tool set.
- Kitchen Pack: The kitchen pack contains files for a paper towel holder, juicer, shot glass, cutting board, coaster set, and more.
- Office Pack: The office pack contains files for a USB dock, desk organizer, iPhone stand, business card holder, table-top football, etc.
SD Card Printing: The R1 +Plus has an SD card slot that allows you to print directly from files loaded onto an SD card. This avoids the printer having to always be plugged into your computer.
